At the May 16 meeting of the Sacramento City Unified School District Board, the Board recognized six fourth grade students from the Leonardo da Vinci TK-8 School Odyssey of the Mind Team as Stellar Students. The Stellar Students are Althesa Harry, Ben Wunsch, Jakob Wilsie, Natalie Altare, Quinne Holkeboer, and Virginia Ruger. 

The Board received an informational update on SCUSD’s Middle School Mathletes program which engages students in grade 7-8 in challenging math competitions. SDUSD’s middle school teams worked with their teacher leaders and teammates to practice and compete monthly. The Board congratulated the top scoring students from each school: 

• Albert Einstein Middle School: Tre Shelby 
• Genevieve Didion K-8: Julia Parr
• Will C Wood Middle School: Nicole Ly 
• Leonardo da Vinci K-8: Emmett Weiner
• Sam Brannan Middle School: Jax Lytle
• Miwok Middle School: Julia Song

The Board also congratulated students with the highest overall scores: Julia Song, top scoring 7th grader  (Miwok Middle School), and Nicole Ly, the top scoring 8th grader (Will C. Wood Middle School), and the top scoring student teams, representing Will C. Wood Middle School (3rd place), Albert Einstein Middle School (2nd place), Miwok Middle School (1st place).

The Board celebrated SCUSD’s 2024-2025 Classified Champions. Classified staff  provide a wide range of essential work throughout the District that supports student learning, safety, and well being, including security, food services, office and clerical work, school maintenance and operations, transportation, academic assistance and paraeducator services, library and media assistance, and computer services. The Board recognized SCUSD’s 2024-2025 Teachers of the Year: Kelly Martinez, a World Language teacher at Rosemont High School, and Erinn Leone, a Social Science teacher at Luther Burbank High School.

The Board approved a resolution to recognize May as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and received informational updates on the following topics: 

• Ways that the District is utilizing a $3.1 million A-G Incentive Grant provided by the California Department of Education to fund activities that directly support pupil access to, and successful completion of, the A-G course requirements. The A-G/College Entrance Requirements are a sequence of high school courses that students must complete with a grade of C or better to be minimally eligible for admission to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU). 
• An annual report from the Black/African American Advisory Board (B/AAAB), including recommendations and key takeaways from the B/AAAB’s work to strategically advocate on behalf of, and with, Black/African American students. 
• A recent notice of noncompliance sent to SCUSD by the California Department of regarding support and services for students with disabilities as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and steps the District must take to address these ongoing concerns.

The Board held public hearings and took action to approve agreements between SCUSD and Teamsters Classified Supervisors, between SCUSD and Teamsters Local 150 Union, and between SCUSD and United Professional Educators (UPE) for the 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. 

The Board took action to authorize an agreement between the District and the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA), to designate SETA as the agency operating the District’s Head Start Preschool and Early Head Start programs. 

The Board received an informational update from the District’s Office of Student Attendance & Engagement and CARE Team on the District’s work to address absenteeism through strategic initiatives and community collaboration with funding support from a Learning Communities for School Success Program (LCSSP) Grant.
