SCUSD Board of Education Recap
April 3, 2025
At the April 3 meeting of the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education, the Board recognized Anthony Estes from American Legion High School. Anthony enrolled at American Legion in May of 2024 eager to begin working on his academic goals. Anthony had fallen behind at his previous school and was in need of credit recovery. Anthony immediately began working on courses with the intention of completing his high school requirements as fast as possible. Through hard work and dedication to his academics, Anthony has positioned himself to graduate at the end of this school year as a junior. Anthony not only thrives academically, but has had a positive impact on the culture at American Legion. He is respectful to both students and staff at American Legion and is well liked by all. American Legion Principal Richard Barnowski writes that “Anthony’s hard work, drive and determination will lead him to find success in whatever post-secondary path he chooses.” Congratulations Anthony!
Announcements from Closed Session included the appointment of Daniel Crenshaw as the next Principal of Fern Bacon Middle School.
Also during Closed Session, the Board accepted a MOU from the Sacramento City Teachers Association to rescind 6.0 FTE layoffs for School Counselors and restore those positions for the 2025-26 school year.
During the Open Session, informational reports were received by the Board, including:
- An update provided by staff and Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) regarding the RydeFreeRT program. In 2024, Sacramento Regional Transit and the City of Sacramento ceased fully funding the RydeFreeRT program that allows students to receive transportation cards to use on SacRT transit at no cost to district students. Sacramento City Unified approved $250,000 in financial support to keep the program intact for 2024-2025.
- The College and Career Readiness Department (CCR) reported to the Board regarding their work in direct support of LCAP Goal 1.
- The Board received an update on the Maintenance and Operations Department regarding the district’s work to keep our facilities in good repair.
The Board then held a hearing to receive public comment before approving the District’s Initial Proposals Regarding Service Employees International Union, Local 1021 (SEIU) Collective Bargaining Agreement Negotiations for 2025-2026.
A Determination Hearing for Charter Renewal for Sacramento New Technology Early College High School was held, followed by an approval vote for a five-year renewal of its charter beginning on July 1, 2025. District staff conducted a comprehensive review of the charter renewal petition, and an evaluation of its program over the most recent charter term, the district review team has determined that SNTECHS satisfied all required criteria.
The Board approved financial contributions to George Washington Carver School of Arts and Science and also The MET, to enable them to meet their financial obligations for the 2024-25 school year and start the 2025-26 school year with the required minimum financial reserve. Requests for fiscal contributions from the District are occasionally necessary to maintain financial transparency and avoid the co-mingling of District and Charter funds.
