Adult education provides essential learning opportunities for individuals 18 years and older, empowering them to achieve personal, academic, and career goals. Through Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes, learners strengthen foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, building confidence for further studies and workforce readiness.
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes support non-native speakers in improving their English proficiency, enhancing communication, job prospects, and community engagement. For those seeking U.S. citizenship, Citizenship Test Preparation courses offer instruction on civics, history, and the naturalization process to help students navigate the path to becoming U.S. citizens.
High school completion programs provide a vital second chance for individuals to obtain the credentials needed for career advancement and higher education. Students can earn a high school diploma or prepare for a high school equivalency (HSE) test, such as the HiSET, through structured coursework and exam readiness support.
Career training education programs offer specialized instruction in high-demand fields, equipping students with the technical skills and industry certifications necessary to secure meaningful employment. By providing flexible learning options and comprehensive support services, adult education fosters lifelong learning and economic mobility, empowering individuals to achieve success in their personal and professional lives.
SCUSD adult education programs also provide inclusive learning opportunities for students with disabilities who are 18 years or older with a high school diploma or equivalency, or 22 years or older without one. These programs are designed to support lifelong learning, personal growth, and increased independence. Through specialized instruction, students develop essential skills that enhance their ability to engage in their communities, pursue meaningful activities, and achieve greater self-sufficiency. Educators use individualized strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs, ensuring that all students receive the guidance and support necessary to reach their full potential.
Instructional classes focus on key areas that promote independence and community integration. Socialization classes help students build communication skills, develop relationships, and navigate social interactions in various settings. Life skills instruction provides training in essential daily activities, such as money management, meal preparation, personal care, and decision-making, empowering students to lead more independent lives. Community access classes offer hands-on learning experiences that teach students how to use public transportation, access community resources, and participate in civic and recreational activities. By fostering confidence and self-advocacy, adult education programs create opportunities for students with disabilities to lead fulfilling and engaged lives
Adult Education has been part of the Sacramento City Unified School District’s public education program since 1872. Classes and career training programs are offered to anyone 18 years or older from the Sacramento Region and surrounding areas.
