Student Support Centers

SSHS operates Student Support Centers at schools throughout the district to provide support to students who are struggling socially, emotionally, behaviorally and/or academically.

At each center, a coordinator works closely with school staff to identify students in need of assistance. Once identified, social workers, family advocates, interns, and community partners work directly with students and parents to address issues that are of concern to them, drawing on other resources for additional support.

SCUSD Student Support Center History

SCUSD’s Student Support Centers (SSC) began in 1992 with support from the California Healthy Start program.  SCUSD was particularly successful in obtaining these grants and established SSC’s at many of the district’s neediest schools.

Though Healthy Start grants were limited to five years of funding, many of these schools continued providing services after grant funding ended.  Between 1992 and 2009, when the last Healthy Start grants were awarded, SCUSD received 14 operational grants to establish SSCs at 26 schools.  Some of these 26 still remain, while additional sites continue to inquire about and bring SSCs to their school communities.
