Basic Schools

Elementary school students walk across the blacktop in a line wearing traditional Chinese attire to celebrate Lunar New Year

Phoebe Hearst and Camellia elementary schools are Basic Schools that emphasize the development of academic skills and good study habits. Students must meet admission criteria to be accepted to the lottery for the Basic Program.

The overall goal of the school staff is to bring together the most successful traditional and new methods of instruction which emphasize academic skills and good study habits.

Parental support at home contributes to children’s success in these rigorous programs. A collaborative relationship between parents and teachers creates ideal conditions for student learning and high levels of achievement.

Enrollment in a Basic School

Basic Schools focus on strong academic skills and good study habits. Students must apply for these schools through the district's Open Enrollment process or through a district permit.

Incoming first graders at Camellia Basic and kindergarteners at Phoebe Hearst must complete a screening process to qualify for the Open Enrollment lottery.
