Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten are special milestones — whether your child is starting school for the first time or moving up from preschool. Learn the differences between TK and Kindergarten and what to expect for your little one.

Both grade levels run for 3 hours and 20 minutes each day. Sac City Unified has both AM and PM classes.

Each school location also offers before and after school care for TK and Kindergarten students. Please check each school program offerings. Before and after school care programs require a separate application to apply.

Transitional Kindergarten

Children who turn four years of age on or before September 1, 2025 can only enroll in TK for the 2025–2026 school year. Sacramento City Unified strictly follows California Education Code on age eligibility for entry to Transitional Kindergarten.

Class sizes are limited to 20 students and include both a teacher and an instructional aide.

Registration is ongoing for TK for the 2025-2026 school year. Please view the locations below to see current availability.

Due to the unprecedented number of applications submitted to the TK Lottery, district permit requests are not available for Transitional Kindergarten.

Information about TK for the 2026–2027 school year will be posted in December 2025
