Men's and Women's Leadership Academy

Through a Social Justice Development Model, we are empowering our young men and women to be scholars of advocacy for Self, Culture and Community!

The Men's and Women's Leadership Academy  (MWLA) is Sacramento City Unified School District's (SCUSD) conscious effort to intentionally combat the school-to-prison-pipeline for underserved low-income students of color by creating supportive and productive learning environments. 

Through a framework of Social Justice Youth Development, and with an active collaboration of district administration, school counselors, certified teachers and youth voice, MWLA empowers students through wrap around services that promote: 

  • Social Emotional Learning 

  • Culturally relevant and responsive leadership development 

  • Meaningful mentorship 

  • Academic support that engages students through their own means of learning

WE DELIVER

MWLA builds on the needs, strengths and aspirations of the youth to unlock potential and inspire leadership. The growth of the Men’s and Women's Leadership Academy has been fueled by student interest and advocacy. The youth have taken a school program and created a fellowship, a family, and a community of youth who share a common struggle – but who recognize themselves as agents of change.

The collaboration and engagement of these young men and women have exposed them to life-changing experiences such as a training opportunities with the Navy SEAL team on Coronado Naval Base outside of San Diego, Restoration Retreats with the Campaign for Black Male Achievement,  and tours of the many monuments and museums in Washington DC and Atlanta.

MWLA is currently operating on 12 campuses throughout SCUSD:
